State Fair Rib Showdown to Be Held During the 2010 Event

 

LEWISBURG, WV (06/30/2010)(readMedia)– The State Fair of West Virginia has just announced the details for the first Rib Showdown to be held Tuesday, August 17 during the 2010 State Fair. Randi Nikolas, Concessions Special Events Manager stated, “We are so excited to present a Rib Showdown! So many people visit the fair for the food, so what better way to showcase food than with a food challenge?

Check-In Time for contestants will be from 7:00 am to 9:00 am and the entry deadline is August 2, 2010. The entry fee per team fee per team is $100. All contestants will receive two (2) Gate Admission Tickets, One (1) Preferred Parking Pass, One (1) Cooking Area (10 x 10), 3 full slabs of St. Louis style ribs provided by Kroger, charcoal provided by Sam’s Club of Beckley (depending on your cooking style additional ribs and/or charcoal may be needed, so please plan your supplies accordingly).

First Place will receive $500 presented by ‘Hearth Home by Ash’s Chimney Sweep’ – Holland Grill. Second Place will receive $250 and third receives $150.

Each team will consist of a designated Chief Cook and as many assistants as the Chief Cook deems necessary. Each team will provide cooking equipment used exclusively by that team within the team’s assigned cooking space of a 10′ x 10′ area. Entries will be judged by a judging team (minimum of three (3) judges). Entries will be scored in areas of APPEARANCE, TENDERNESS/TEXTURE and TASTE.

Farm Family Insurance and State Fair Announce 2010 Farm Art Decorating Contest

 

LEWISBURG, WV (06/29/2010)(readMedia)– Farm Family Insurance is pleased to sponsor a hay bale contest in conjunction with the 2010 State Fair of West Virginia. This second annual event will feature an on premise contest with round bales and an off premise photo contest. Off premise contestants will decorate round or square bales and use farm related props to create a display based on the 2010 State Fair theme “Genuine Homegrown Fun.” Three community groups will be selected for the on premise component which features 3 round bales strategically placed on the fairgrounds and also featuring the 2010 theme.

Off premise prizes are as follows: First Place $300, Second Place $200, and Third Place $100. On premise contestants will be rewarded as follows: First Place $200, Second Place $100, and Third Place $50.

Photos need to be emailed to statefairofwv@statefairofwv.com and will be posted on the State Fair of West Virginia’s Facebook page. On premise will be judged via people’s choice at the Farm Family exhibit site along with a panel of Farm Family judges.

Winners Announced for Smart529 State Fair Coloring Contest

 

LEWISBURG, WV (06/16/2010)(readMedia)– Winners for the 2010 Smart529 State Fair of West Virginia Creative Coloring Contest have been selected. Hundreds of entries were submitted from throughout West Virginia. The 2010 contest featured the fair’s “Genuine Homegrown Fun” theme with entries judged on the quality of the coloring and the creativity of the name of the Garden in the picture. First place winners receive $50, 4 State Fair gate admission tickets, and an Ipod nano. Winners are as follows:

State Fair of WV Announces 2010 Scholarship Winners

 

LEWISBURG, WV (06/14/2010)(readMedia)– The State Fair of West Virginia, in association with corporate, civic and individual contributors, has awarded five (5) $1,000 four (4) year scholarships from the State Fair Scholarship and Endowment Program. These scholarships recognize youth who have participated in the State Fair, excelled academically and demonstrated a proven financial need.

Applicants must be a West Virginia resident and must be pursuing a vocational trade, associate or bachelors degree, and must have participated in the Junior Livestock Show, Equine Show or 4-H and FFA Youth Exhibit Program within the past five (5) years. Applicants must be eligible for college admission during the same year in which they apply for the State Fair Scholarship, or must be currently enrolled in post secondary education.

The State Fair of West Virginia is proud to announce the following recipients:

  • Adalia Trudgeon from West Union, WV – will attend Marshall University in Fall 2010
