Donate Food To Win State Fair Grandstand Tickets

To call attention to the growing problem of the critical shortages of nonperishable food items in food banks across the country, the State Fair of West Virginia has donated tickets to Radio Greenbrier (home of WRON, WKCJ and WSLW) for free concert tickets. The State Fair of West Virginia will be held August 12-20 in Fairlea.

Four winning packages will be drawn for two admission tickets and two grandstand show tickets to the following shows: Jamey Johnson and Lee Brice, Friday, August 12; The Band Perry, Monday, August 15; Chris Young and Steel Magnolia, Tuesday August 16; and Buckin’ B Bull Riding and Colt Ford, Saturday, August 20. The four winners will be announced and contacted on Monday, August 8.

To enter, bring a nonperishable food item to the Greenbrier, Monroe, or Pocahontas USDA Service Center to receive a ticket to be placed in the drawing. Multiple entries are permitted. Service centers are located in Lewisburg on Northridge Drive (between the Bank of Monroe and the Shell station on Route 219 North), in Union on Route 3 East (one mile from Union), and Buckeye on Route 219 (south of the Marlinton Middle School).

The nonperishable items may be donated through Friday, August 5. Recommended items include canned fruits, multigrain cereals, canned proteins, 100 percent juices, healthy snacks, canned vegetables, soups, condiments, and paper products (napkins, paper towels, toilet tissue).

All food collected will benefit local food pantries through the Feds Feed Families campaign.

State Fair to Have Designated Smoking Areas

LEWISBURG, WV (07/22/2011)(readMedia)– The State Fair of West Virginia and Community Connections, in cooperation with the West Virginia Division of Tobacco Prevention, and the Coalition for a Tobacco Free West Virginia, have teamed up to offer outdoor designated smoking areas at the State Fair. While smoking is not prohibited on the grounds, the goal is to encourage visitors to use the the designated smoking areas which will will be scattered throughout the fairgrounds. According to Manager, Marlene Pierson-Jolliffe, “We feel that Designated Smoking Areas are the right compromise between folks who don’t want to experience second hand smoke while watching a show or standing in a line and those who do smoke and want to enjoy the fair. Overall, we hope this will make it easier on our hard
working grounds crew who are tasked with cleaning up thousands of cigarette butts. For years, we’ve prohibited smoking in the grandstand and smoking in all barns and buildings. This is the next logical step.”

Greg Puckett, Executive Director with Community Connections stated that, “Over the past few years, numerous fairs, festivals and parks around the Country have moved to protect the general public from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke. With over 7000 chemicals loaded into each cigarette, many of which are known cancer causing agents, making the move to protect fairgoers here in West Virginia is extremely important to the well-being of those that choose not to smoke.” Puckett added that, “The designated smoking areas will be clearly marked and there will be disposal units to keep the area neat and clean. We would like to thank the State Fair Board for making such a positive step forward.” For the past two years, Community Connections, in partnership with the state’s Regional Tobacco
Prevention Coordinator network, have participated in tobacco education at the State Fair by promoting a quit line with the help of the West Virginia Blazers

State Fair Announces 2011 Farming Heritage Award Winner

LEWISBURG, WV (07/11/2011)(readMedia)– The sixth annual Farming Heritage Award will be presented to the The Call Family-Stacy, Rosella, and son, Zachary of Milton, WV. The award is sponsored by the State Fair of West Virginia and the West Virginia Farm Bureau, and presented to a worthy family who has demonstrated a commitment to a rural lifestyle, been involved in their community, and served as role models to others in the state of West Virginia.

Three generations of the Call Family have continued the operation of this 100-plus acre farm. The Call’s primarily raise 100 head of cattle, but also run 20 brood cows with calves and do Artificial Insemination to upgrade their genetic line. Additionally, they keep about 10 sows to provide an outlet for 4-H and FFA members who participate at fairs, and use four donkeys for predator control of the farm.

Zachary pursues his own farming enterprise by investing in the meat goat program, keeping three miniature horses, and adding to a flock of hens. The Call Family continues the legacy of community service with memberships in agriculture related associations, and community/civic activities. In memory of their son Seth, the Call Family sponsors a $500 award to a program which allows children with disabilities to work closely with a 4-H member to show a lamb at their local fair.

The Call family will participate in the Farming Heritage Award Ceremony held on Thursday, August 19, “Governor’s Day” at the 2011 State Fair. Their award will be presented by State Fair President John Wilson and West Virginia Farm Bureau President Charles Wilfong. The Honorable Acting Governor Earl Tomblin and the Honorable Commissioner of Agriculture Gus R. Douglass will address the group and participate in the awards ceremony. Also, included in the award package is a day at the fair, including overnight accommodations, free admission, preferred parking, as well as an engraved Natural Stone Award.

Applicants for the 2011 Farming Heritage Award were competitive and the judges commend these farming families for their dedication and longevity to the farming industry.
