We are honored to recognize the 2013 State Fair of WV Scholarship Recipients. These youth have participated in the State Fair through various exhibitor activities, excelled academically and have demonstrated a financial need.
Jossie Brooks, daughter of Richard & Lisa Brooks from Lewisburg, WV, is a 2013 graduate of Greenbrier East High School. Jossie has shown market and purebred swine at the SFWV since 2001 and has participated in many 4-H and FFA projects for the Fair since 2007. She has been recognized for her academic excellence by being inducted into the National Honor Society (2011, 12 & 13), served as the President of the Lewisburg Longhorns 4-H Club for 2012 and 2013, and was a member of the SFWV Youth Leadership Council in 2011 and 2012. Jossie is receiving the Gus R. Douglass Scholarship and will attend West Virginia University in the Fall.
Olivia Workman, daughter of Matthew & Elizabeth Workman from Hillsboro, WV, is a 2013 graduate of Pocahontas County High School. Olivia has shown market steers, angus heifers and feeder steers at the SFWV since 2004 and has participated in 4-H projects for 2007 & 2008. Olivia played soccer and basketball for four years and served as Captain for both teams in 2012 and 2013; she was also recognized as the PCHS Wendy’s Heisman Winner. A member of the National Honor Society in 2012 and 2013, Olivia, will attend West Virginia University in the Fall.
Samantha Walton, daughter of Kirk Walton and Andrea O’Brien, is from Buckeye, WV, and a 2013 graduate of Pocahontas County High School. Since 2007, Samantha has shown market lambs and market hogs at the SFWV. She was a member of the National Honor Society, served as Vice-President of the Spanish Honor Society in 2012 and 2013 and served as Captain of her soccer team in 2012 and 2013. Samantha will attend West Virginia University in the Fall.
Stacie McMillion, daughter of Lisa Richmond from Hinton, WV, is a 2013 graduate of Summers County High School. Stacie has shown in the Junior Horse & Pony Show at the SFWV with both Quarter and Arabian horses. She has also been active with 4-H (11 years) and FFA (3 years) and has participated in various projects for both. Recognized for her academic excellence as a member of National Honor Society, where she served as Vice President in 2012, she has also been involved as President (2010) of the Rusty Spurs 4H Club and Key Club President (2012). Stacie will attend the University of Charleston – Beckley Campus in the Fall.
Malia Berg, daughter of Brent & Beverly Berg, from Petersburg, WV, is a 2013 graduate of Petersburg High School. Her involvement in the SFWV began in 2005 where she has shown market lambs, market goats, breeding sheep and breeding heifers. Malia has been an active member of both 4-H and FFA, serving as President in 2010 and 2011. She has served as the WV Angus Queen and was President of the WV Angus Association in 2011. Recognized for academic excellence as a member of her National Honor Society, Malia will attend Bridgewater College in the Fall.
The State Fair of WV Endowment was created in 2006 to ensure the long-term support of three key areas; Scholarships & Career Advancement Initiatives, Youth Educational Enrichment Programs as well as Agricultural & Competitive Exhibit Premiums.
The Endowment, in conjunction with key corporate sponsor and individuals, support our Scholarship program which provides five (5), 4-year scholarships annually at $1000 a piece for each year that student maintains their academic standards. For every year that we make an award, we commit $20,000 for that class of Scholarship recipients.
The 2013 State Fair is themed, “Feel the Magic”, and is scheduled for August 9-17.
