2010 State Fair of West Virginia

LEWISBURG, WV (09/07/2010)(readMedia)– The 2010 State Fair of West Virginia proved true to its theme of “Genuine Homegrown Fun!” According to Manager, Marlene Pierson-Jolliffe, there were many highlights. Jolliffe stated, “2010 was a very, very solid year for the State Fair with a strong opening weekend, a complete day of rain in the middle, and then a strong finish at the end.”

Final audited gate numbers are not yet available, however, projections are as follows:

* Gate Attendance – 195,000

* Concert Tickets – 26,547 (up 57% over 2009 and the highest in over a decade)

* Food Concession Sales – up 3.5% over 2009

* Carnival Gross – down less less than 1/2 % (with one day of rain) 48 rides on the midway

“It takes nine complete days to make our event, and the success is a testament to the hundreds of volunteers and employees who love the State Fair and work hard to make it enjoyable for fairgoers and exhibitors. With the costs to do business increasing annually and many external pressures that are out of our control, it always feels good to get “another fair on the books,” stated Pierson-Jolliffe.

The State Fair’s new automated ticketing and scanning system will provide details on crowd flows at particular gates. This system also allowed for scanning children under 5 who are admitted free of charge without a ticket, and rough data shows over 9,000 youngsters were scanned.

Pierson-Jolliffe states, “T he State Fair represents the people of West Virginia and has brought families together for generations. We will strive to fine-tune our operation and continue the traditions at the 87th annual event August 12-20, 2011.”

The State Fair of West Virginia, with an $8.9 million dollar economic impact on Greenbrier County, is a 501 © 3 non-profit corporation committed to the traditions of agriculture, family entertainment, and education. For more information, please visit www.statefairofwv.com.
