LEWISBURG, WV (08/15/2011)(readMedia)– Representatives from 14 counties across the state competed for the title of best pie baker in the State Fair of West Virginia’s Best of the Counties Pie Bakeoff. Contestants were chosen to participate by having the most votes in their county pie bakeoff. Contestants brought their pies to the fair on Saturday, August 14 to be judged based on taste, originality, appearance, and variety of ingredients.
After judging the pies on the fair’s new Blue Ribbon Stage, judges determined the first place winning baker was Jessica Garrett from Mercer County with her Black Bottom Coconut Cream Pie. Second place went to Sarah Plumley from Kanawaha County for her Peach Bourbon Pecan Crumb Pie. Third Place was awarded to Susie Kirkpatrick from Gilmer County for her Farm Fresh ‘Just Peachy Pie.’
All pies were prepared at home and brought to the fair. Contestants had to pre-enter the competition and submit an ingredient list.
First place was awarded a ribbon, $150, and a Commerative Fiesta Ware Deep Dish Pie Baker. Second place received a ribbon and $100. Third place received a ribbon and $50.
